Natures Rug

April 20, 2010

Natures Rug   35″ x 53″

This rug has a linen warp set at 5 EPI and the weft is handspun, hand dyed wool.  I used a variety of plants for the different dye lots.  I dyed with onion skins, beet root, golden rod, madder, birch leaves, oak leaves, iris, day lillies,  jewelweed and tansy.

I used a rosepath twill tie up for the weaving.

Intertwined Scarves

April 9, 2010

Well it is finally hanging at the Rails End Gallery.  It is approvimatly 6′x9′.  Got it up yesterday.  Hope it stays hanging and does not slump.  I used a variety of yarns (merino, merino-seacell, wool and mohair) and dyed with lots of stuff.  Day lillies, maple leaves, golden rod and jewelweed to name a few.  This has been a project about a year in the making.  I don’t think I will tackle this again, but… never say never.  I learned tons.

This is some of the yarn that I dyed last summer and have used for weaving scarves.  This was taken at the Stanhope Heritage day.

Getting ready for my show

March 5, 2010

This shawl was woven on a triangular loom using nature dyed hand-spun yarn.  I used singles in the weft and coiled (bee-hived) for the warp.  I had done a shawl before this using the coiled in the weft, what a pain that was.  The coils were always getting caught and pulling.

The colours are very subtle.  I used a variety of materials for dying, jewelweed, lichen and madder (separate dye pots.)  All of the yarns were dyed in the fleece (rovings) then spun after and the fleece used in this was from the end of the dye pots.  I like to exhaust my pots, to much effort involved in gathering the stuff not to use every drop.
